Radiance Within

Children silhouette

There is a fluttering in the stomach

A clutching of the chest

Clinching inside the throat

A tightening around the head

Leaden legs are attached to muscles that won’t move

The tongue is stuck to a shrill voice

That is fear

It shifts the eyes to look out to a desert

Reminding the body of the parched land of failure

Fear strokes every cell of your body

She turns you over and hugs you tight

She demands that you look her straight in the eye,

as pulls out a cold wedding band and slips it around your finger

Those vows demands that you wake up to a hollow day,

where you walk with your head bowed and your dreams veiled

Those nuptials, with fear, sit you in a small box in the corner of the room,

where you watch the actions, drama and thrillers of

free children, wild women and dancing men

Braving the jungle will lead to a new frontier

A mountain top only knows those who shiver

The prize is given to the gritty one in the race

Trembling kisses crack the heart wide open

Live and love through a journey with fear

Lift your head, get up, walk across the room, run!

Fear will chase you, grab your sleeve, pull you back

Lock your eyes to the sky, move to a stride, flow to a sprint

Fear limps as you dash and stumbles when you jump

Fear may be your partner but she is not you

So twirl and swirl. Sing and shout. Skip and hop.

Watch her lope and grope. Heave and ho. Rage and scream.

Fear’s tension in your head unwinds on the savannah of knowledge

Her grip of your throat unclenches in your power

Her clutching of your heart lets go into the span of love

Your gut relaxes to the drums of your tribe

Belly dance to the flow in the rhythm

And step out with all that radiates within

into the carnival that fills your streets

We are big

your size...big (photo by John Scully)

your size…big (photo by John Scully)

His anger is pressed against her face
The fury pins her to the wall
Her eyes see only the rage
He sits across her life
She remembers that she is big
A wide infinite space
The anger floats into obscurity
A strong gust sweeps the fury
She sees his confusion
He shrinks into a midget
The air becomes still with peace

I am a believer

A man

I’ve never been here before
My breath catches
The sound races through me
Senses barely keeping up
The clock stops ticking
Words lock into rhythm
I can’t move
Then filled with rap fuel,
I eject into his sphere

My hands hold my mouth back
I know but can’t say
That I’ve touched heaven
Zapped by mighty power,
I rock with the angels
I close my eyes
that only see a man
When I know that I’ve met God

Thousands of Spirits
Jump out of dark suits
Screaming and shouting
Crying and sweating
Here we are one
We are in deep and free
He loves millions into his embrace
The music stops
I still believe

Lemn Sissay!

Lemn, a resident artist at the Southbank Center (London), is a poetic dynamite. I think he has changed my life as a poet forever. He is a great example of the healing, freeing and entertaining power of poetry. He is an embodiment of creativity (quite literally). His web page is full of goodies http://www.lemnsissay.com

Here are a couple:

Watch him give a poetic response to an interview question

I will not forget who I am

You, Me, Glory

The country has lots its bridle

Kenyans are running wild

Votes cast can’t be found

A twilight swearing-in ceremony

inviting the darkest night

Warriors chant, mothers run

Homes burn, men die

Angry feet stampede

Today no one will meet

where teargas fills the street

This is not who we are

We are not animals

We know how to count

The President is not the devil

Men do not thirst for blood

Protesters do not want to bring the country down

Women are full of love

Children dream and believe

We have just forgotten who we are

The envious voice is smooth

One day your luck will run out

The fearful words are definitive

You will die a violent death

The defeated spirit is clear

Your man will tame you into cotton wool

The shamed opinion comes first

Let me be honest, you are a mess

The negative response is natural

It will be challenging where you are

The anxious advice is for free

You must run around to survive

That is not who I am

The black rain does not mean a thing

You flail about and froth in the mouth

It has nothing to do with me

A lot has been stolen and I am still rich

I have all the time I need and

Age looks beautiful on me

I am a woman with all the good things

The roof has caved in and its’ warm inside

My leg is broken and I rest my mind

I will not forget who I am
